WDHC Teams News June 2010 Minimize

May was quiet with no team events.  However June has been entirely different!!

Felbridge 13 June 2010

We started with Felbridge Show Jumping Area Qualifier for National Finals in Lincoln in September.  That took place on 13th June.  Yes, the same day as the main day of our Annual Show.  We had no control over that and we had to run one of the three rings in use for the whole day.  As you can imagine, it was a very long day and lots of hard work for all my helpers on the day.  Notably Jo Matthews, who was Chief Steward, from 9am in the morning.  Caroline Jaycocks and Tracey Tickner, who took over from Jo and kept the ring flowing from 3.30 until 6pm and the army of helpers who filled in when they weren’t jumping.  Too numerous to mention, but they know who they are. A very BIG thank you to all of you from me and Lucy Cunliffe, on behalf of Area 10.  She said you all did an absolutely fantastic job and made the ring run extremely smoothly.

We all went there expecting to jump on grass and on arrival, at 8am for me, found that they were only using one grass arena and that was for the Style jumping.  Mary Gee had a go at that and now tells me she probably won’t bother again.

Down to the nitty gritty of how we really did.  The junior novice team were fab.  They flew.  Robyn Kite, Alice Brock, Amy Tickner and Jenny Peach.  Kept me jumping up and down all morning.  They got a very well deserved 5th in the team event and Robyn got 5th individually.  GREAT STUFF

Senior Novice was Serena Fox and Vicky Baker.  Both horses took a dislike to being on sand and to the same fence and were out of the running

The Junior Intermediate Individuals, Charlee Bywater and Rosie Osborne were unplaced this time.  Unusual for those two.  But it was a tiny arena to jump 95 in.

Senior Intermediates had the brand new waxed sand arena, with so much space in it, it was untrue.  Becky Bates had to withdraw and hour before the competition.  Kim Deakin, Mary Gee, Lewis Simmonds, Clare Shepherd, Natalie Pelling, Michala Blackburn, Sarah Edmonds and Amanda Skinner all went in this class.  It looked lovely, but we had 3 fallers.  The most spectacular of which was Mickey.  Her falling photos can be seen on www.spidge.com .  No placings in that class.

Senior Open was 1.05 and was in the same tiny sand school as the Junior Intermediate.  That was tight and this looked ever so slightly impossible.  I was so nervous for them, it was untrue. Louise Squire, Annette Murphy Shelley McCoy and Chris London faced a team from Dartford, who I know are seasoned jumpers at this height and above.  One Dartford member pulled out, saying the arena was too small.  Chris was eliminated on passport grounds and had to jump HC.  That left three in each team.  One Dartford member was eliminated in round 1 and Shelley had a really unlucky fall at fence six, so she was eliminated too.  No one went clear in round one.  Judges said there would be no round two, so we all prepared to pack up and go home, when Lucy told them there had to be round two for individual placings.  Even though both teams were eliminated.  That left Louise and Annette to jump the second round.  Blue looked like he had had enough, so Annette took the right decision to forfeit fourth place and retire.  Now it got exciting and scary.  Lou against the two top Dartford riders.  She was outstanding on the brilliant Oscar.  She came second to a horse who is used to jumping 1.30.  WELL DONE LOU.

Borde Hill 20 June 2010

Another early start for me and my long suffering army of fence judges.  Namely:- Mary Gee, Shelley McCoy, Vicky Baker, Mickey Balckburn and Kate Brock (in the cross country starters box for the day).  Sorry Kate, I promise not to make you do that one again.  Many thanks also to Serena Fox and Lauren Alexander who came along later to give my fence judges a well earned break and seemed to be the Chief Whistle Blowers on the course!

I entered two teams and one individual for the Novice Class.

Warlingham 1 were:- Kim Deakin and Emerald Isle, Jade Forlani and Laughtons Silver Belle, Jo Lord and Cheyenne Star and Natalie Pelling and Lady Marmalade.

Warlingham 2 were:- Clare Shepherd and Maverick, Louise Squire and Oscar, Annette Murphy and Legends Mystic Blue and Sarah Edmonds and Mr Foyle Clover.

Individual was Chris London and Hobbs competing HC

Dressage came and went.  All got good scores ranging from 30.9 penalties to 43.2.  Next came show jumping with one elimination, two on four faults and the rest clear in the teams.  Cross Country was now looking exciting.

To my great delight all went clear except one.  Paddy was just not right on the day and eliminated in both SJ and XC.

Hobbs also decided that it was too much on the day.  But good experience for Chris as he competed HC, so didn’t affect any results.

Now we had to wait for the scoring.

Individual placings came first.  Jade got third and Jo got fourth.  FABULOUS I thought.  A great result.  We waited for what seemed like hours to me for the team results.  Of course they write them up in alphabetical order, starting with Ardingly and finishing with>> Yes you guessed it… Warlingham.  By the time they got to Uckfield they had given out 2nd to 6th placings and my heart was in my boots.  The individual winner had ridden for Uckfield.  So, I’m hanging on to Lou’s arm and saying “oh well that’s it then”, when they wrote Uckfield up as two team members eliminated, therefore the whole team was eliminated.  Flash to the brain!! We had to have won.  Sure enough Warlingham1 WON.  I have to tell you that I jumped up and down a lot and so did the others.  Team 2 came 9th out of 18 teams.  No disgrace there and I was very pleased by their overall performance.  Two of those horses had never done a one day event.  It was only time penalties that kept them out of the top six and a bit of tweaking on dressage.  Watch out for them next year.

I’m now waiting for an invitation to take Team 1 to the SEIB National Finals at Ashton-Le- Walls on 7-8 August.  I’ll let you know about that later.

Area Dressage Qualifier Speedgate 18th July

In the meantime we have another Area qualifier for Lincoln Finals of dressage at Speedgate.  If you would like to be in the teams, please call me on 07766313850, or email on jean.bywater@bromley.gov.uk .  I have to put in prelim entries by Sunday 27th June

Kent County Show

We have two senior teams of four jumping in the Riding Clubs Jumping 1metre class at Kent County Show.  We would love support.  Please come along.  It is a good day out.

Hickstead

We have mixed teams going to Hickstead on 1 August in the Riding Clubs Jumping Class.  If you would like to be a reserve (in case anyone drops out, which they usually do), please contact me, as above.  Also would like a few supporters PLEASE.

If you fancy joining us, give me a call.  It’s a great atmosphere.  Everybody cheers each other on and most importantly, WE HAVE FUN.

Well that’s all the news for June.  Phew, don’t seem to have stopped.  Talk to you again after Kent County and Speedgate in July

WDHC Teams News April 2010 Minimize

Well, after a quiet winter with little teams activity since Christmas, it looks like we’re up and running again.

Team Friendlies at Eaglesfield

We had Area Friendly jumping at Eaglesfield in February, which was Novice height only. The first class was a speed class for juniors, won by our very own Livy Painter and Dutch Courage. Well done Livy. This was followed by teams of four jumping for juniors, where we had two unfortunate falls, both girls bruised and a broken finger, but no serious damage, thank goodness. Seniors jumped the same format in the afternoon. No fallers and some good rounds, but not quite enough to get placed.

FOTH (Festival of the Horse) Area Qualifier April 17th at Redlands (Sevenoaks)

A lovely early start! I had to be there to walk the course with the Junior Team at 8.30. It was a bright, sunny day though, so the early start wasn’t too unpleasant. The course was more of an eventers challenge format, than pure cross country, with a round of show jumping first. Unlike previous years. We sent a team of 3 juniors, a junior pair, a team of four seniors and two senior pairs. We had lots of lame horses in the preceding week and had to exclude a couple of horses who’s vaccination records were not up to scratch.

Juniors started at 10am. First to go was Robyn Kite with Nikita Sunrise, who was unfortunately eliminated in the show jumping and then not allowed on to the cross country course. Followed by Charlee and Bywaters Diamond Mist, who got round the showjumping ok, which was a feat in itself as the course was very tight for a big horse. Charlee was eliminated at the deep steps. Our last junior was Alice Brock and Kate’s lovely mare Phoebe. They got round the show jumping ok and completed cross country with just one stop. Well done Alice. Charlee and Robyn then had pairs. The show jumping phase was Rescue Relay (Each jumps a round and swap the whip between rounds). They completed that and went flying off round the cross country course. Just one mistake at the triple offset rolltops, but they still came 7th.

Seniors next. First of was Kim Deakin and the ever reliable Emerald Isle. No problems SJ and a lovely smooth cross country round, clear, but with 8 time penalties. Next came Louise Squire and Oscar. Again, no problems SJ and a blistering cross country round, clear, but with times penalties (Too fast). Amanda Skinner and Symfonie K (Sebastian) followed. Amanda hung on for grim death (her face was a true picture) and got round in one piece. Michala Blackburn and Hustle Jack were the last of the Senior Team of 4. They went clear SJ, but Jack decided he was having none of fence 2 (rails, jumping into shadow and covered with plastic pigeons, of all things) and they were eliminated. So no one placed in Senior teams.

Last class of the day was senior pairs. Amanda and Michala went first. Flew round the lot and were placed 6th. Now it was my turn to panic. I foolishly agreed to do pairs. Normally my feet are planted firmly on the ground at these team events. So Sarah Edmonds and Mr Foyle Clover and Me and Shadowlands Bramble headed to the S J. Surprisingly, I got round ok and we headed to XC. Disaster struck at fence 2 Paddy (Mr F C) did a Jack and took a dislike to fence 2. He jumped it on the third attempt, but by now the inexperience of Bramble showed and she was having none of it. Obviously convinced that the plastic pigeons were going to peck her legs off, we were eliminated.

Next Team events are:- Area Show Jumping Qualifier at Felbridge 13th June (Juniors and Seniors, Novice, Intermediate and Open)

Area One Day Event Qualifier at Borde Hill 20th June (Juniors and Seniors)

Teams of 4. 1.0m jumping at Kent County Show 17th July (Seniors only)

Area Dressage Qualifier at Speedgate 18th July (Juniors and Seniors)

Teams of 3 Longines RIHS at Hickstead date tbc (Usually first weekend in August. Mixed teams. No ponies under 14.0HH)

Teams are open to all WDHC members with a horse with a qualifying vaccination record. If you can jump a course at 2ft 6 ins, you should be good enough to compete for us. Unlike most Riding Club Teams, WE pay the entry fees for classes and ask for just a £10 donation per event, per rider, towards costs. So, don’t be shy, get in touch.

We also ALWAYS need helpers at events. You can still be part of the teams, without having to do the scarey bit. Go on, you know you want to!

There are various team events coming up and we are keen to hear from you if you would like to be considered. Please contact Jean Bywater on 077663 13850 or jean.bywater@bromley.gov.uk if you would like further information. It is always great fun! All we ask from you is that you provide your own means of getting to the events, that your horse is fully vaccinated and meets the requirements of the FEI rules (see the British Riding Clubs Area 10 website) and that you are comfortable at the height you wish to jump. We are required to provide helpers for the Horse Trials Qualifier and the Show Jumping Qualifier at Felbridge which we will ask any competitors to help us with via friends, family etc. These events cannot run without an army of volunteers and each club is obligated to assist.

We look forward to hearing from you OR if you are a member and you get placed at one of our events, we may approach you!!!! Our scouts are out there!!!

 Team Competitions Minimize

Warlingham and District Teams

Horse club teams are really fun especially with Warlingham & District Horse club.

A Bit of History

I have been taking part for YEARS!!!

I have managed to qualify for a few championships over that time but have actually only made it to one due to one thing or another e.g. lame horses, foot and mouth, bad weather.

The one I did manage to get to was the indoor championships at which I fell off - typical!! But it was a brilliant experience (not the falling off part) and hopefully I’ll get another chance to take part at a riding club championship soon. Fingers crossed.

What we look for in a Team Member

All team members encourage one another, at events and clinics by cheering and supporting, we create a great atmosphere wherever we go. There is no pressure and everyone in the teams must understand we are riding horses/ponies and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. It’s our hobby so should be enjoyable whatever the outcome.

The General Rules

All qualifying classes are split into juniors and seniors.

Juniors are for the under 18 year olds.  However they are still classed as Juniors until the January after their 18th birthday.  Juniors can ride ponies or horses.

Seniors are for the oldies well the 18 year olds plus. They have to be riding a mount of 14hh+.

The ages of the riders are taken from 1st Jan of the competing year.

Everyone competing at a qualifying event must have a valid vaccination certificate in accordance with the British Riding Club rules. Most vets are aware of these. If not please get in touch, contact details can be found at the bottom of the article.

The Heights

Heights of the competitions vary, the most popular being the Novice which is 2’6”-2’9”. There is an intermediate 3’-3’3” and an open which starts at 3’6”!!

Qualifying Events and National Championships

There are many Area 10 team events throughout the year including SJ, Dressage, X Country and Horse trials.

They qualify for the British Riding Club Championships which are held all over the country. To qualify you would have to be placed first and maybe second-  it depends on the amount of teams entered.

We will state on the team details were the championship is being held. We do like the qualifying team to compete at the championships where possible. Please do not put your name forward knowing that you are unavailable for the championships without letting us know.

Cost

Warlingham and District do pay for towards team entries but, we do ask all team members for a £10 donation per event and to provide their own transport to the venue.

We do try and share lorries where possible to keep the costs for team members to a minimum. If you do not have access to transport please still let us know you’re interested, we will try and help where possible.

Our Goals this Season

This year we are really focusing on the teams.

We are trying to enter as many capable teams as possible in all the Area 10 team events.

We are hoping to enter some capable teams at the Kent County Show and at The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead, both to be held in the summer, which should prove to be a great family day out. It would be lovely for those not competing to come and show their support - loud cheering is always welcome.

We are also hoping to enter some non riding club teams for practice and a bit of fun. There may even be some smaller classes available for those who are not confident enough to go straight in at the novice level.

So there should be something for everyone - no excuse!!!

Come on everyone let's go out and do Warlingham and District Horse Club proud, let's have fun and enjoy ourselves!!

Where can you Find the Details?

All the details of 2010 team events can be found on the internet as soon as we receive the schedules so please keep an eye on the team page. We will also try and get the details in the newsletter where possible.

Who do you Contact?

If you would like to join in the team events please get in touch with:

Some of our team members (past and present) views and comments about riding on the Warlingham and District Horse Club Team.

' As a veteran of dressage teams way back when, it always sounded rather daunting as you immediately think you need to be able to perform all sorts of intricate movements amongst very superior people all looking down their noses at you but its really not like that at all.  Think of going to a local competition, yes there are some more advanced classes going on but the majority of riders are on the same level, everyones really friendly and its a fun day out.  My horse was never very good at sophisticated leg twiddling movements anyway, at least not inside a dressage arena! So if you are interested then let us know and we will support you as much as we can'.

Lyn Palmer

‘My best memory if going clear at the Team event at Hickstead - I still have the Hickstead entry pass at home somewhere.

I have now returned to the teams and its great to be back.  Everyone is very supportive of each other, especially nerves, even if they are panicking inside themselves (Micky!).

Horses and people, no matter how well they practice together can still make mistakes, but we all support each other, be it success, a clear round, mistakes, or a crashing fall, as I found to my experience at the Ardingly Horse trials, where I fell on my head at the first XC jump.

Jo Mathews kindly consoled me, after she had run all the way over to where I had fallen off. I was still lying flat out on the ground by the time she had arrived, by when I did get up, by saying "At least I had not driven the 50 miles to Ardingly, to fall off at the first xc country fence for a hunter trial, at least I had got to ride the dressage and show jumping first"!’

Mary Gee-Smith

‘I used to compete for the junior teams a good few years ago and have just started to compete for the club again.  I mostly remember the great atmosphere at both the qualifiers and the championships which I have been to a number of times, even winning one of the area 10 showjumping qualifiers as an individual.  I cant wait to get back to one!!’

Kelle Fry

'It was a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere and not nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be'  'Its a fun day out with a great bunch of people - I would definitely give it another go!'  Thanks to all at the WDHC that go to great efforts to organise these things.

Helen Mullinger

‘I have been doing the teams on and off for a few years now (volunteering)?!  And I suppose my biggest success was when I won overall winner at an Area 10 Show Jumping competition at Bradbourne (a few years ago now) still on Jack when we first started. My only regret was not going to Lincoln to the finals although at the time jack was a bit of a bugger loading. You wouldn’t think that now!

I love the competitions maybe not when I have the build up because I still suffer with nerves but to watch the team members riding there round and every bit riding it with them. Poor Jack must wonder what I’m doing while sitting on his back jumping up and down as we (the team) take on each jump with apprehension after each attempt and the final jump a clear round and a roar of delight for our member getting through. The suspense is electrifying!  If you’ve never done it you should try it, it doesn’t matter what level you jump at, its still great fun!’
