Would you like to represent WDHC at a team event?

We are keen to hear from you if you would like to be considered for a place on our teams.  It is always great fun! All we ask from you is that you provide your own means of getting to the events, that your horse is fully vaccinated and meets the requirements of the FEI rules (see the British Riding Clubs Area 10 website) and that you are comfortable at the height you wish to jump. We are required to provide helpers for the Horse Trials Qualifier and the Show Jumping Qualifier at Felbridge which we will ask any competitors to help us with via friends, family etc. These events cannot run without an army of volunteers and each club is obligated to assist.

We look forward to hearing from you OR if you are a member and you get placed at one of our events, we may approach you!!!! Our scouts are out there!!!

Competing for Warlingham & District Horse Club in 2011 Minimize

Now that January is out of the way, we're sure you're all looking forward to competing on our team (even if qualifiers haven't already taken place for the Winter Dressage and Novice Indoor Show Jumping Championships).

If you have not yet received your Membership Card, please do urgently let us know as you may need to produce this along with your horse's flu vaccination certificate when you got to your qualifier.  Your membership details need to be on the BRC database at the close of preliminary entries, 21 days prior to the qualifier that you are taking part in, otherwise you will not be insured.

Should you be lucky enough to qualify and you are on a declaration sheet but your details are not on the BRC database, BRC will investigate why the club has not sent those details in and seek evidence to assure them beyond doubt that it was the member's full intention to compete within the rules.  If this cannot be sought, then that member will have to be disqualified and the results would be recalculated.  Each case is assessed on an individual basis.  Remember, this is for your benefit so if you want to take part in teams please make sure you join the club or renew your membership in plenty of time before the event you wish to take part in.

Good luck at the qualifiers!

WDHC Teams News, Autumn 2010 Minimize

FOTH Qualifier 10th October at Lodge Farm

For once this was a sensible hour event with the Open Class running first. We entererd a Senior Novice Team, a Senior Novice Individual, two junior novice pairs and a mixed pre-novice team, so we didn’t have to get there before midday. What a result!! Kim, Mary, Clare and Louise made the senior team, with Chris competing as an individual. Junior pairs were Charlee & Robyn and Lauren & Emma with Charlee, Robyn, Lauren and Amanda competing in pre-novice.

The Senior Novice Team amassed a few faults in show jumping, but all went clear cross country and came 8th, just out of the rosettes. Hobbs decided he wasn’t doing any show jumping and got Chris eliminated. Both junior pairs flew round. Charlee and Robyn were unplaced, but poor old Lauren’s sat-nav wasn’t working and she and Emma were eliminated for her missing a show jump. In pre-novice Charlee had a silly stop. Robyn flew, but got time penalties for being too fast. Amanda went clear but with cricket score time penalties and at last Lauren’s sat-nav kicked in and she came a well deserved 4th.

London & South East Championshipsat Ardingly 16th October

Crack of dawn start for this one!!! Our winning Eventing Team from Borde Hill qualified for this one day event final. However, Jo Lord’s Cheyenne Star is happily in foal and cannot compete and Natalie’s Lady Marmalade was lame. So Kim and Jade were joined by Louise and a last minute new member, Debbie Farmer. A hiccup in the dressage for Jade, when someone decided to ride across her arena, whilst she was riding her test! No other problems. Really good performances show jumping and all clear cross country, with just some time penalties for Louise. Everyone was tired and wanted to go home (It did bucket down in time for the cross country phase), so I said I would hang around for the score sheets etc. The results went up, Kim, Jade and Lou, each came 10th in their sections, but our new girl, Debbie came 3rd. Amazing, it was the first time she had competed for us. I happily accepted her rosette from Lucy Cunliffe and headed for home.

Eaglesfield Team Jumping 14th November

This one was run by Dartford & District RC. Mixed teams of four juniors and seniors. Two of which to be novices and jump at 2ft 6 and two to be open standard and jump at 3ft. Three of the four scores were to count. One of the open jumpers to jump off, if the team was clear. Pretty complicated rules but nice to be able to mix juniors and seniors on the same team.

We sent five teams of four: - Warlingham One Second Wonders were Robyn Kite, Amy Tickner, Charlee Bywater and Louise Squire. Warlingham Wonderfuls were Vicky Baker, Josie O’Hara, Emma O’Hara and Clare Shepherd. Warlingham Wannabe Winners were Jade Shaw, Chris London, Maddie Chalmers and Jessie Horne. Warlingham Will Do’s were Lucy Jones, Georgia Smith, Mary Gee and Livi Painter. Warlingham Wishfuls were Gem Cunningham, Katie Barnes, Tracey Warrell and Kim Deakin.

Three of our five teams got through to the jump off with Louise jumping for the One Second Wonders, Maddie jumping for the Wannabe Winners and Livi jumping for the Will Do’s. First of our three to jump was Louise, who went fast, but rolled a pole on the final fence. Next was Maddie, also fast, but also had a pole. Finally, Livi. She rode that jump off like a pro clear and four seconds faster than any previous clear. We just had to hope that no one else beat her time. It was nail biting until the last competitor, Connor Hudson-Smith for Dartford. He flew and I know that pony is really fast. I stood there covering my eyes, couldn’t watch. He finished his round clear and 0.2 seconds SLOWER than Livi. Well that was it, the place erupted. WE WON A CUP. THE MOAT HOTEL CHALLENGE CUP to be precise. I have to say that there were a couple of tears in my eyes (of joy) as I collected it during the presentation. HAPPY DAY

NISJ Area 10 Qualifier at Duckhurst 20th November

They say that pride comes before a fall. I’ve really got to start believing in these things, because it was certainly true at Duckhurst. This was junior novice teams of four and senior novice teams of four. Which meant we were without our star of the previous week, Livi, as Dutch Spirit has won too much to qualify as a Novice.

Junior teams were:- Warlingham One Second Wonders, Charlee Bywater, Robyn Kite, Amy Tickner and Lucy Jones and the Warlingham Wannabe Winners, Lauren Alexander, Ella Bland, Bethany Bowen and Gemminie Cunningham.

Our Senior teams were The Warlingham Wonderfuls, Emma O’Hara, Natalie Pelling, Clare Shepherd and Sarah Edmonds and the Warlingham Will Do’s, Vicky Baker, Shelley McCoy, Kim Deakin and Clare Shepherd (again, but on another horse).

Each horse was to jump one round at 2ft6 and a second round at 2ft9. Three of the four scores to count, followed by a jump, off.

We had FIVE FALLERS, three juniors and two seniors. The worst of which was poor Emma O’Hara, who flew off the side after fence 8, crashing into the gallery wall. I ran in with Emma’s Husband and it was obvious that she had hurt herself. Paramedics attended and an ambulance was called. Then the long wait for the ambulance to come from Maidstone Hospital. It finally arrived and Emma was taken to casualty. Happily she wasn’t badly injured and was released that night.

After the delay we carried on, but the double clear rounds we needed to get into the jump off eluded us, all except Natalie who jumped double clear, but was then eliminated for jumping before the bell. Loud music in the arena to blame for that one. Good performances to finish on four faults from Robyn on Nakita, Charlee on Maddie, Gem on Oscar for the juniors and Kim on Emerald Isle, Sarah on Bywater’s Diamond Mist and Clare on Maverick for the seniors. We finally finished jumping at nearly 6pm and wearily headed for home. NOT SUCH A HAPPY DAY. Still, it comes with the territory. We’ll be back after Christmas.

Teams are open to all WDHC members with a horse or pony with a qualifying vaccination record. If you can jump a course at 2ft 6 ins, you should be good enough to compete for us. Unlike most Riding Club Teams, WE pay the entry fees for classes and ask for just a £10 donation per event, per rider, towards costs. So, don’t be shy, get in touch.

We also ALWAYS need helpers at events. You can still be part of the teams, without having to do the scary bit. Go on, you know you want to!

 Team Competitions Minimize

Warlingham and District Teams

Horse club teams are really fun especially with Warlingham & District Horse club.

A Bit of History

I have been taking part for YEARS!!!

I have managed to qualify for a few championships over that time but have actually only made it to one due to one thing or another e.g. lame horses, foot and mouth, bad weather.

The one I did manage to get to was the indoor championships at which I fell off - typical!! But it was a brilliant experience (not the falling off part) and hopefully I’ll get another chance to take part at a riding club championship soon. Fingers crossed.

What we look for in a Team Member

All team members encourage one another, at events and clinics by cheering and supporting, we create a great atmosphere wherever we go. There is no pressure and everyone in the teams must understand we are riding horses/ponies and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. It’s our hobby so should be enjoyable whatever the outcome.

The General Rules

All qualifying classes are split into juniors and seniors.

Juniors are for the under 18 year olds.  However they are still classed as Juniors until the January after their 18th birthday.  Juniors can ride ponies or horses.

Seniors are for the oldies well the 18 year olds plus. They have to be riding a mount of 14hh+.

The ages of the riders are taken from 1st Jan of the competing year.

Everyone competing at a qualifying event must have a valid vaccination certificate in accordance with the British Riding Club rules. Most vets are aware of these. If not please get in touch, contact details can be found at the bottom of the article.

The Heights

Heights of the competitions vary, the most popular being the Novice which is 2’6”-2’9”. There is an intermediate 3’-3’3” and an open which starts at 3’6”!!

Qualifying Events and National Championships

There are many Area 10 team events throughout the year including SJ, Dressage, X Country and Horse trials.

They qualify for the British Riding Club Championships which are held all over the country. To qualify you would have to be placed first and maybe second-  it depends on the amount of teams entered.

We will state on the team details were the championship is being held. We do like the qualifying team to compete at the championships where possible. Please do not put your name forward knowing that you are unavailable for the championships without letting us know.

Cost

Warlingham and District do pay for towards team entries but, we do ask all team members for a £10 donation per event and to provide their own transport to the venue.

We do try and share lorries where possible to keep the costs for team members to a minimum. If you do not have access to transport please still let us know you’re interested, we will try and help where possible.

Our Goals this Season

This year we are really focusing on the teams.

We are trying to enter as many capable teams as possible in all the Area 10 team events.

We are hoping to enter some capable teams at the Kent County Show and at The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead, both to be held in the summer, which should prove to be a great family day out. It would be lovely for those not competing to come and show their support - loud cheering is always welcome.

We are also hoping to enter some non riding club teams for practice and a bit of fun. There may even be some smaller classes available for those who are not confident enough to go straight in at the novice level.

So there should be something for everyone - no excuse!!!

Come on everyone let's go out and do Warlingham and District Horse Club proud, let's have fun and enjoy ourselves!!

Where can you Find the Details?

All the details of 2010 team events can be found on the internet as soon as we receive the schedules so please keep an eye on the team page. We will also try and get the details in the newsletter where possible.

Some of our team members (past and present) views and comments about riding on the Warlingham and District Horse Club Team.

' As a veteran of dressage teams way back when, it always sounded rather daunting as you immediately think you need to be able to perform all sorts of intricate movements amongst very superior people all looking down their noses at you but its really not like that at all.  Think of going to a local competition, yes there are some more advanced classes going on but the majority of riders are on the same level, everyones really friendly and its a fun day out.  My horse was never very good at sophisticated leg twiddling movements anyway, at least not inside a dressage arena! So if you are interested then let us know and we will support you as much as we can'.

Lyn Palmer

‘My best memory if going clear at the Team event at Hickstead - I still have the Hickstead entry pass at home somewhere.

I have now returned to the teams and its great to be back.  Everyone is very supportive of each other, especially nerves, even if they are panicking inside themselves (Micky!).

Horses and people, no matter how well they practice together can still make mistakes, but we all support each other, be it success, a clear round, mistakes, or a crashing fall, as I found to my experience at the Ardingly Horse trials, where I fell on my head at the first XC jump.

Jo Mathews kindly consoled me, after she had run all the way over to where I had fallen off. I was still lying flat out on the ground by the time she had arrived, by when I did get up, by saying "At least I had not driven the 50 miles to Ardingly, to fall off at the first xc country fence for a hunter trial, at least I had got to ride the dressage and show jumping first"!’

Mary Gee-Smith

‘I used to compete for the junior teams a good few years ago and have just started to compete for the club again.  I mostly remember the great atmosphere at both the qualifiers and the championships which I have been to a number of times, even winning one of the area 10 showjumping qualifiers as an individual.  I cant wait to get back to one!!’

Kelle Fry

'It was a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere and not nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be'  'Its a fun day out with a great bunch of people - I would definitely give it another go!'  Thanks to all at the WDHC that go to great efforts to organise these things.

Helen Mullinger

‘I have been doing the teams on and off for a few years now (volunteering)?!  And I suppose my biggest success was when I won overall winner at an Area 10 Show Jumping competition at Bradbourne (a few years ago now) still on Jack when we first started. My only regret was not going to Lincoln to the finals although at the time jack was a bit of a bugger loading. You wouldn’t think that now!

I love the competitions maybe not when I have the build up because I still suffer with nerves but to watch the team members riding there round and every bit riding it with them. Poor Jack must wonder what I’m doing while sitting on his back jumping up and down as we (the team) take on each jump with apprehension after each attempt and the final jump a clear round and a roar of delight for our member getting through. The suspense is electrifying!  If you’ve never done it you should try it, it doesn’t matter what level you jump at, its still great fun!’
