Horse club teams are really fun especially with Warlingham & District Horse club.
A Bit of History
I have been taking part for YEARS!!!
I have managed to qualify for a few championships over that time but have actually only made it to one due to one thing or another e.g. lame horses, foot and mouth, bad weather.
The one I did manage to get to was the indoor championships at which I fell off - typical!! But it was a brilliant experience (not the falling off part) and hopefully I’ll get another chance to take part at a riding club championship soon. Fingers crossed.
What we look for in a Team Member
All team members encourage one another, at events and clinics by cheering and supporting, we create a great atmosphere wherever we go. There is no pressure and everyone in the teams must understand we are riding horses/ponies and sometimes things don’t go according to plan. It’s our hobby so should be enjoyable whatever the outcome.
The General Rules
All qualifying classes are split into juniors and seniors.
Juniors are for the under 18 year olds. However they are still classed as Juniors until the January after their 18th birthday. Juniors can ride ponies or horses.
Seniors are for the oldies well the 18 year olds plus. They have to be riding a mount of 14hh+.
The ages of the riders are taken from 1st Jan of the competing year.
Everyone competing at a qualifying event must have a valid vaccination certificate in accordance with the British Riding Club rules. Most vets are aware of these. If not please get in touch, contact details can be found at the bottom of the article.
The Heights
Heights of the competitions vary, the most popular being the Novice which is 2’6”-2’9”. There is an intermediate 3’-3’3” and an open which starts at 3’6”!!
Qualifying Events and National Championships
There are many Area 10 team events throughout the year including SJ, Dressage, X Country and Horse trials.
They qualify for the British Riding Club Championships which are held all over the country. To qualify you would have to be placed first and maybe second- it depends on the amount of teams entered.
We will state on the team details were the championship is being held. We do like the qualifying team to compete at the championships where possible. Please do not put your name forward knowing that you are unavailable for the championships without letting us know.
Cost
Warlingham and District do pay for towards team entries but, we do ask all team members for a £10 donation per event and to provide their own transport to the venue.
We do try and share lorries where possible to keep the costs for team members to a minimum. If you do not have access to transport please still let us know you’re interested, we will try and help where possible.
Our Goals this Season
This year we are really focusing on the teams.
We are trying to enter as many capable teams as possible in all the Area 10 team events.
We are hoping to enter some capable teams at the Kent County Show and at The Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead, both to be held in the summer, which should prove to be a great family day out. It would be lovely for those not competing to come and show their support - loud cheering is always welcome.
We are also hoping to enter some non riding club teams for practice and a bit of fun. There may even be some smaller classes available for those who are not confident enough to go straight in at the novice level.
So there should be something for everyone - no excuse!!!
Come on everyone let's go out and do Warlingham and District Horse Club proud, let's have fun and enjoy ourselves!!

Some of our team members (past and present) views and comments about riding on the Warlingham and District Horse Club Team.
' As a veteran of dressage teams way back when, it always sounded rather daunting as you immediately think you need to be able to perform all sorts of intricate movements amongst very superior people all looking down their noses at you but its really not like that at all. Think of going to a local competition, yes there are some more advanced classes going on but the majority of riders are on the same level, everyones really friendly and its a fun day out. My horse was never very good at sophisticated leg twiddling movements anyway, at least not inside a dressage arena! So if you are interested then let us know and we will support you as much as we can'.

‘My best memory if going clear at the Team event at Hickstead - I still have the Hickstead entry pass at home somewhere.
I have now returned to the teams and its great to be back. Everyone is very supportive of each other, especially nerves, even if they are panicking inside themselves (Micky!).
Horses and people, no matter how well they practice together can still make mistakes, but we all support each other, be it success, a clear round, mistakes, or a crashing fall, as I found to my experience at the Ardingly Horse trials, where I fell on my head at the first XC jump.
Jo Mathews kindly consoled me, after she had run all the way over to where I had fallen off. I was still lying flat out on the ground by the time she had arrived, by when I did get up, by saying "At least I had not driven the 50 miles to Ardingly, to fall off at the first xc country fence for a hunter trial, at least I had got to ride the dressage and show jumping first"!’

‘I used to compete for the junior teams a good few years ago and have just started to compete for the club again. I mostly remember the great atmosphere at both the qualifiers and the championships which I have been to a number of times, even winning one of the area 10 showjumping qualifiers as an individual. I cant wait to get back to one!!’

'It was a relaxed and very friendly atmosphere and not nearly as scary as I thought it was going to be' 'Its a fun day out with a great bunch of people - I would definitely give it another go!' Thanks to all at the WDHC that go to great efforts to organise these things.

‘I have been doing the teams on and off for a few years now (volunteering)?! And I suppose my biggest success was when I won overall winner at an Area 10 Show Jumping competition at Bradbourne (a few years ago now) still on Jack when we first started. My only regret was not going to Lincoln to the finals although at the time jack was a bit of a bugger loading. You wouldn’t think that now!
I love the competitions maybe not when I have the build up because I still suffer with nerves but to watch the team members riding there round and every bit riding it with them. Poor Jack must wonder what I’m doing while sitting on his back jumping up and down as we (the team) take on each jump with apprehension after each attempt and the final jump a clear round and a roar of delight for our member getting through. The suspense is electrifying! If you’ve never done it you should try it, it doesn’t matter what level you jump at, its still great fun!’
